How to Follow Through With New Year’s Resolutions?

7 Steps To Achieving Your

Only 8% of People Do This

3 Steps To Achieving Your New Year's Resolution

We are now in December of 2022 and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is alive and well. Over the last couple weeks, we’ve actually had some of our clients starting to talk about New Year’s resolutions and trying to come up with some things that they can do. So, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about some of the things that we’ve discussed with some of our clients here to make 2023 a success for them.

What’s really interesting is, when you talk about New Year’s resolutions, about 60% to 70% of people that do put on or attempt New Year’s resolutions do so in the form of health, or self-help, or self-improvement, somewhere in that category. What’s staggering is that only about 8% actually follow through with that goal.

That’s pathetic. We’ve got to be doing better than that. There’s no way only 8% of the of the United States follows through with what they say they’re going to do. So, what do you need to do to make 2023 a success? Well, the first thing you need to do is you need to write out your goals. Sit down. Take some time and think about what it is that you really want to achieve in 2023. Some people want to read a book every month.

Other people, “I want to lose weight.”  Some people, “I want to increase my activities.” Whatever it is, that’s great. Write it out. If you don’t write it out, and you don’t put it somewhere that you can see consistently, it tends to fizzle away into your memories. And then it’s in the year and you’re like, “Oh yeah, I wanted to do that.” And by then it might be too late.

Along with that is what things go into actually writing your goal. Well, first you need to be specific. Be specific about what it is that you want to do, and make it specific for you, not anybody else. A lot of times you start the cooler talk of talking to your friends and then they say, “Hey, I’m going to do this New Year’s resolution.” You’re like, “Yeah, I should do that too.” Make it specific for you.

How you go about doing it may be entirely different? I’ll get to that here in just a bit.

Be Measurable

The second part is that it needs to be measurable. I think this is probably the easiest thing for people to do but is the thing that tends to get left out. How are you going to know you’re successful? You’ve got to have some kind of measure to it. So, whether it will be your exercise 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week. Great. You at least know that if you’re not hitting that, you’re not on target to hit your goal.

Then you need to make sure that it’s attainable and realistic. If you weigh 200 pounds and you say you want to lose 50 pounds, you’ve really got to look at yourself and go, “Can I really do that or am I going to literally starve myself, in which there can be a serious health consequence along with that?

Put A Timestamp On It

And the last piece is that you need to make sure that it is time-specific. So, by February, this is what I want to achieve. By May, this is what I want to achieve. By October, this is what I want to achieve. And by December, this is what I want to achieve. If you give yourself a time component that helps you to understand…are you on track with that plan?

Now, you can start with one big goal, which can ultimately have several little goals underneath it, but all those little things should help push you towards that big goal. Now, at LEVEL4, we all have different things that we like to do. I like doing Pilates, yoga, and she does a little bit of weightlifting and running by the beach.  All of us have similar goals but how we go about getting that goal done…entirely different. And that’s okay.

In fact, I would even tell you that some people need a little bit of help in trying to figure out what it is that they want to be able to do. And that’s why we have started talking with a lot of our clients on some of the other services that we provide, to help people be realistic and achieve the goals in which they want for 2023. We have Pilates classes and Private sessions, and we even a naturopathic doctor service that are going to be starting in January to really help you take a deep dive into what you might be missing in order to optimize your health as a female. Have you had your hormone and vitamin levels checked? How’s your gut health? Do you suffer from a chronic issue, fatigue, bloating, dry skin, or weight gain? This testing from Dr. April is going to be super helpful for you! We’ve got a lot of things that are going on to help support people in 2023!

Enjoy it

My last bit of advice for you is that, for 2023, make sure that you’re doing things that you really enjoy doing because if you don’t enjoy it, the likelihood is you’re not going to stick to it. And the best part is when you can get the things that you enjoy. Get the people that are around you to do those same things. Take your kids on a hike or on a bike ride. Get your friends to go out, and go to the beach and play some volleyball, whatever it may be, have fun with it and the social support that you need in order to achieve it.
