How Injured Active Military (and Their Families) Can Overcome the Frustration of Having to Wait So Long to Be Seen (On Base), Feeling Like Time is Being Wasted, and Not Getting the Results Desired… Which Keeps You From Enjoying Work, Life, and Performing At Your Best!

If you are active or retired military, a spouse of someone in the military and have sustained an injury, then you are probably feeling pretty bad about not being able to live an active lifestyle.  It can be very tempting to simply "wait and see" if it heals or have been told to just rest 6 weeks and it will get better...

This mindset is completely opposite of how most people think today when it comes to injuries.  The faster you get treatment, usually the faster your recovery is. You are able to eliminate the stiffness quickly, decrease the pain almost immediately, and get you on the road to recovery.  So, when you do not respond appropriately to an injury, you leave yourself suffering with the injury and wondering:

"It's Been a Month Now... So Why am I Still Suffering With This Injury That is Also Keeping Me From Being Active?"

So many people think that their injury is "not that bad" and it will get better with just a little rest and they will quickly be able to exercise and be active again.  But when they do go back to their activity again, they are restricted or limited, which can make things even worse than when it first happened.  You see, most people will have little to no pain when they rest... And then when you start back up, the pain comes back.  And no matter how much you rest it, it doesn't seem to get any better.

Does That Sound Like You?

It is also not uncommon for military personnel to be told they have to wait weeks or longer than you would like for an approval before getting in to see a physical therapist on base - wasting precious time to return to soldier readiness.

Maybe you’re already receiving treatments on base and your problem is not getting any better with the current program you’re receiving and feel like you are wasting your time.

Or maybe you feel down because you are "stuck", wanting to get back, but feel lost or wondering if you will ever be able to get back to being ready to perform in the line of duty or staying active like you used to be.

It is not uncommon for people to think that when they are this frustrated to think "I don’t have another choice and if I ignore this, it will eventually go away on its own." It can be quite easy to think that there is no other way… Or that the injury, pain or stiffness you are experiencing is something you must live with... and that is just what happens as you get older.  Maybe you have done nothing at all to hurt yourself (that you can recall) ... but it just isn't getting any better.

If any of these describe you, we want you to know that you are not alone... And we hear our clients talk about these "feelings", "thoughts", and “experiences” all the time.

On top of that, we have spent a combined 30 years in the orthopedic realm treating active military families who want to overcome an injury, maximize in sport or life… so they can continue doing all the things they love.

In fact, Lower Back Pain, Knee Pain, Neck and Shoulder Pain, Women’s Health Issues, Sport Injury, and post-surgery recovery are THE most common problems we see in our physical therapy clinic in Encinitas. We see people like this all the time and they all want the same thing!

And when it comes to living with an injury, everybody we see wants to know...

"Why is This Happening to Me?"

or

“Why Am I Still Suffering From An Injury After Putting Up With It For Weeks (Maybe More)?"...

Most people think that when they get an injury, it’s simply going to go away on its own. The hope is that they may wake up and the pain will have disappeared like Houdini, almost like it had never even occurred.

But then the pain returns and the same "hope" you had before to magically drive it away does not happen.  Several months later you're still living with pain, which often gets worse than it was before.

Does That Sound Like You?

Another scenario that we see quite frequently in our Physical Therapy Clinic is when people go to the Doctor, and the Doctor tells them to just rest and “try these painkillers”... and “let's see how it goes".  Does that sound familiar?

But wait... it gets even better! This approach rarely offers significant positive outcomes and after 6 weeks, you return to the Doctor because so little change has occurred.  Now, the Doctor may refill your prescription pain pills. Remember, they did not do much in the first 6 weeks.

The irony really is, that the "wait and see" approach to treating an injury is highly ineffective.  It often causes more frustration because the passive approach does not work for most people.  And then they tell you to rest some more or to order high-level imaging, like an MRI.  And we wonder why we have such a problem with managing pain here!  It's madness... and even borderline insanity (that we keep doing things the same way and expecting a different result each time).

Is This How You Feel Too?

If You Are Currently Frustrated And Living With An Injury, Here Are 7 Reasons Why It Could Be Taking Longer To Return:

  • 1. You thought it would go away on its own... but it didn’t
  • 2. You went to the Doctor who told you to just rest and take painkillers - but the pills did not do anything to help your pain, and as soon as they wore off, chronic pain struck again
  • 3. A family member, or friend, told you that everybody gets pain as they get older, so it should just be accepted
  • 4. You tried other Healthcare Professionals, or a Physical Therapist on base in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help very much
  • 5. You tried Googling "Back, Knee, Neck and Shoulder Pain" and have used YouTube videos to do exercises but they either didn’t do a thing, or perhaps made your pain much worse
  • 6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest because your pain was so bad, but all that did was make it feel even more stiff and tight
  • 7. The route you have been on so far didn’t do anything to fix it long term…

If any of these have ever happened to you, we would love to help you and invite you to book in a call to talk with one of our physical therapy specialists at our Encinitas Physical Therapy Clinic to find out what can be done to help your specific problem.

“What Can I Do To Get Rid Of MY Pain Quickly?”...

Well, here's 3 things you can do:

  • 1. First things first, you need to make a decision about getting proper help. So many people procrastinate for so long, thinking that their pain or injury will "just go away with time," but then 6 months down the line they’re still putting up with it.  Worst off... nothing has really changed… Or it gets worse
  • 2. Next, you need to do the RIGHT exercises. One of the best things that we do to help you ease and recover from pain or an injury is to do the right SERIES of progressed exercises.  The right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help ease pain, and allow you to quickly move more freely again.  We make sure that the problems don’t come back anytime soon or aggravate you anymore, like some exercises will do.  How does that sound?
  • 3. You need to get some real, “hands-on” Physical Therapy treatment. Physical Therapy is proven to help people with an injury or pain. In fact, at LEVEL4 back pain, knee pain, neck and shoulder pain, and pelvic floor pain are several of the most common injuries we see. "My experience with Dr. Oscar at LEVEL4 was fantastic! I had bounced around with other physical therapists for a couple years trying to rehab my knee. After my first session with Dr. Oscar I knew I had found the answer. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but also takes the time to explain everything in a way I could understand. He also treats you in a way I've never see at a PT do before. This allows him to measure your progress and clearly show and quantify how you've improved. After working with him for a couple months my knee is in better shape than it has been in years. I will, without a doubt, visit him in the future for any injury related issues and refer anyone who is in need."

"Level4 has really helped me improve in a lot of ways... speed, strength and just my mentality has grown a lot about wanting to play soccer...  It's a great program and you learn a lot about the different thing that they do differently from the rest. Within a few weeks I noticed I got stronger on the ball, I was getting into tackles harder and I was putting up a fight more than what I used to. Thank you!!"
