Having a fall is no joke…

In our “Balance & Fall Prevention” workshops that we host at the clinic, we often start by talking about what we refer to as the “downward spiral” that occurs after having a fall.

While your friends and family might view your fall as an isolated incident and expect you to just get on with life as usual, you probably know that having even just one fall can be extremely life-altering.

In this downward spiral, falling leads to a reduction in your confidence as you start to experience things like fear, anxiety and even anger. This tends to lead to a decrease in your overall activity level, as you try to avoid activities that might make you feel unsteady.

A decrease in your activity level will lead to weakness and poor balance, which will ultimately make you even more likely to experience another fall.

And given enough time, you’ll start to really miss out on the activities you enjoy, like going for walks, interacting with your spouse and/or friends, and being active with your kids and grandkids. This often leads to a sense of depression and isolation, and for some may result in a loss of independence.

This may sound very doom and gloom, but it’s why I’m so passionate about helping people improve their balance and maintain their mobility and independence!
